What is Lucite?

Lucite is a high-quality material from the 1960s to the early 1980s that possesses properties of both plastic and glass, mirroring the clarity of glass while maintaining a heavier feel than traditional plastics. Discovered in 1931 by DuPont chemists, it was among the first plastics derived from petrochemicals and was sold to jewelry manufacturers after the war. Lucite beads were subsequently mass-produced using this material throughout the 1960s and early 1980s.
